I’ve been to dozens of trade shows across my career. Across numerous companies, in every kind of industry, at every scale imaginable. From the 10x10 booth that every one of my startups always starts with — the scrappy little square where you’re assembling the display yourself the night before — to massive multi-story million-dollar booth experiences at CES where the production rivals a Broadway show. I’ve seen the whole spectrum.

Patrol 6 is about to have its first. ISC West — March 25 through 27 at the Venetian Expo in Las Vegas. The overall conference runs March 23 through 27 with education sessions starting early in the week, but the exhibit hall — where we’ll be — opens Wednesday March 25 through Friday March 27. Our booth is number 32092, in the Emerging Tech Zone.

Every trade show I’ve attended has been filled with energy. But it’s always the first show for a new company that carries the most electricity. There’s a unique kind of uncertainty that comes with debuting — how will the market receive what you’ve built? Will the pitch land? Will people get it? You’re about to make a ton of new contacts in a compressed window of time — press, influencers, industry experts, potential customers, potential partners. It’s nervousness and excitement braided together, and honestly that combination is one of the best feelings in the startup experience.

As a bootstrapped company, trade shows are a real financial conversation. I’ve never been able to attend one cheaply. In my experience, it always seems to cost at the low end around $250 a square foot when you add up travel, hotel, booth expenses, show services, graphics, shipping — everything that goes into showing up. That number climbs to $500 or even $1,000 a square foot when you start building those mega multi-story platforms at the big shows. For a company watching every dollar, it’s a meaningful bet.

So you question it. Why spend this much of your precious early capital on a trade show?

I’ll tell you why — because in my experience, every show I’ve attended has been worth the money. You only need one customer to justify the entire expense. One real lead. One relationship that turns into a contract. If you choose the right show to debut at, the math works. And ISC West is the right show for Patrol 6 — it’s the largest physical security trade event in the country, and the people walking those aisles are exactly who we’re building for.

And there’s a bigger question worth addressing, especially now. In a world where everything is happening online, where AI is reshaping how we communicate and sell and connect — what’s the value of showing up in person?

Here’s what I’ve learned across eleven companies and more trade shows than I can count: there is something about the human connection between individuals in the same industry that you simply cannot replicate online. The relationships you build face to face — standing in front of your product, shaking someone’s hand, reading their reaction in real time — those are not the same as a cold email or a LinkedIn intro or a Zoom demo. They’re not close. The face-to-face meetings still matter. We still live in the real world. And for a company like ours — selling a service for people who work in the real world, protecting real places and real people — we better show up and be present.

I’m excited and I’m nervous. That’s the cocktail. And these are always the most fun times as a startup — the moments you look back on years later and realize they were the beginning of everything. Your first trade show only happens once in a company’s history. It’s a coming-out moment, and you either remember it fondly or you don’t remember it at all because you never took the leap.
